Chekpoint 4 - Port de Pailhères Km 744

At the start of Day 3, a good distance separated the participants.

Yvonnick climbed the Gorges de Galamus in total darkness, Chris followed after Day break, and Pierre was there in the afternoon and took the time to take and share photos with us.

The biggest climb of the day was Port de Pailhères which doubles as checkpoint 2 and 4. They already climbed the Oriental Pyrenees giant’s western slope the day before. The eastern slope isn’t only steep, it featured an impressive set of perfect switchbacks that open up to a spectacular plateau with free-roaming horses and soaring vultures.

Times at Km 744 on top of Port de Pailhères:

Yvonnick at 13:24 after 53h20’
Chris at 17:24 after 57h20’
Pierre at 21:08 after 61:04’

Chris and Pierre seemed well, pacing themselves to perfection. After 744km on Pailheres, Chris didn’t only reach the top with a big smile, he looked as fresh as if had just started his ride at the bottom. Yvonnick although he kept an impressive pace was suffering first from foot blisters, and then from high right Achilles’ tendon. He was so much in pain in Pailheres that thoughts of abandoning crossed his mind. He seemed better in the evening. Ultra distance bikepacking requires incredible mental strength.

After Pailhères , Yvonnick continued on to climb col de Port, lac de Lers, col d’Agnes and col de Latrape before finding a shelter at 22:41 in the village of Seix.

Chris climbed col de Port and stopped at 23h50 when he found a shelter on his way down to Massat.

Pierre descended Pailheres at night in the rain and stopped in an auberge on the way down.

Bravo to Yvonnick, Chris and Pierre for another incredible day of ultra-bikepacking.

En début du 3e jour, une bonne distance séparait les participants.

Yvonnick a gravi les Gorges de Galamus dans l'obscurité totale, Chris a suivi en fin de matinée, et Pierre était là l'après-midi. Il a pris le temps de prendre et de partager des photos avec nous.

La plus grosse montée de la journée a été le Port de Pailhères qui est le checkpoint 2 et 4. Ils ont déjà gravi le versant occidental du géant des Pyrénées orientales la veille. Le versant oriental n'est pas seulement escarpé, il présente un ensemble impressionnant de lacets parfaits qui ouvrent la vue sur un superbe plateau avec des chevaux en liberté et des vautours en plein qui planent au-dessus des crêtes.

Chris et Pierre semblaient bien, gérant leurs efforts à la perfection. Après 744 km sur Pailheres, Chris n’a pas seulement atteint le sommet avec un grand sourire, il avait l'air frais comme s'il venait juste de commencer à rouler. Yvonnick, bien qu’il ait gardé un rythme impressionnant, souffrait d’abord d’ampoules aux pieds, puis plus embêtant, du tendon d’Achille droit. Il souffrait tellement en grimpant Pailheres que des pensées d'abandon lui traversèrent l'esprit. Il semblait mieux le soir. Le bikepacking ultra-distance nécessite une incroyable force mentale.

La météo peut changer rapidement en montagne. Yvonnick a profité d’un beau soleil, Chris est arrivé au moment ou nuage menaçant s’approchait et la température descendait, et Pierre a fait la descente sous une pluie battante.

Après Pailhères , Yvonnick continue sa montée au col de Port, au lac de Lers, au col d’Agnes et au col de Latrape avant de trouver un abri à 22h41 dans le village de Seix.

Chris a gravi le col de Port et s'est arrêté à 23h50 lorsqu'il a trouvé un abri en descendant vers Massat.

Pierre est descendu de Pailheres la nuit sous la pluie et s'est arrêté dans une auberge en descendant.
